The Baden-Zug Markstein team won the bronze medal at the Junior A Swiss Championships. After a strong final round and an intense semi-final, the season ended with a well-deserved third place – a great success and an emotional farewell for assistant skipper Siro Schmid. Baden Skip Elodie Jerger wins Gold with her Team St. Gallen-Flims-Baden.
Behind in the top 4 round
As the fourth-placed team, Baden started the final round of the top four teams, two points behind the second and third-placed teams, who had the same number of points. In the round-robin phase, the team achieved an important victory and a strong last stone draw quotient, which secured their place in the semi-finals. At the expense of Team Interlaken-Bern.
There, the team from Baden met the team from Morges, which started the final round in second place. The game was hard-fought. Morges was able to steal twice, but Baden stayed close. Despite being behind before the last end, everything remained open. A two-end lead would have meant victory, or one stone in the extra end. The chance to reach the final was within reach – but a slightly too narrow line during the last stone prevented the coup. A few millimeters made all the difference. Unfortunately for Baden and fortunately for Morges.
In the small final against Interlaken-Bern, Baden showed a controlled and tactically clever performance from the start. The team hardly allowed any chances for high scores and dominated the game with calm consistency. A small mistake in the sixth end, which allowed Interlaken to score two stones, was the only weak phase worth mentioning. After that, the pressure was increased again and the opponents were forced to make mistakes.
Emotional conclusion
With third place, the team crowned a strong season – both in terms of sport and mental strength. For vice-skipper Siro Schmid, it was the last game of his junior career. Due to age, he will leave the team after the season. Schmid not only leaves a gap on the ice, but also in the dressing room, where he has contributed significantly to the team spirit with his commitment, experience and leadership. In his curling career, Siro Schmid has experienced some highlights, be it the Swiss championship title with the Cherry Rockers, the EJCT Win in Thun or the bronze medal at this Swiss championship. This success could be followed by the Hallenmeister title in two weeks at the finals in Baden. With the player Nils Freimann, who was available as an alternate this season, the gap in the team is closed. At the same time, the transfer market is also on the lookout for another player, so that
Zug-Dübendorf defends Swiss championships title
The Zug-Dübendorf team became Swiss champions, repeating last year’s title win when they were still playing under the name Wildhaus-Zug. Last year’s skip left the team for Basel this season, but despite this, the team was able to celebrate a start-finish victory without suffering a single defeat. They are a well-deserved Swiss champion, and hopefully the national team will also achieve good results at the Junior World Championships.
Baden also shines in the junior women’s competition – championship title for St.Gallen-Flims-Baden
Success for the junior women too: on Sunday, the St.Gallen-Flims-Baden team secured the Swiss junior women’s A championship title. They beat the CC Limmattal team, led by skip Zoé Schwaller, twice in the best-of-three final. This was the second consecutive final for the team from Limmattal – and once again they came away empty-handed.
Elodie Jerger’s team, who lost in the second game, put in a focused and mature performance in the decisive third game. The Baden skipper, who only joined the team at the start of this season, was particularly impressive, leading her team to victory with a steady hand and tactical acumen.
It is a well-deserved triumph for St.Gallen-Flims-Baden. After a mixed last season due to internal restructuring, the team has now established itself at the top. With the championship title, the successful World Cup qualification and the Cup they have already won, the double win is perfect – a milestone for the team and the clubs involved.
We hope to see both teams at the EJCT Baden 2025!
